Kevin McCarthy promises ‘action’ after latest racist remarks by Steve King

On Thursday, King said to The New York Times: "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?"

"Action will be taken", McCarthy said, adding the two had a meeting scheduled on Monday.

"Republicans should make clear Mr. King is no longer welcomed in their party or Congress".

"He likes to create a personal relationship, build the relationship and rebuild the relationship with other world leaders", McCarthy said.

"We're not asking the Democrats to do something they haven't done before. In the future, I hope Steve King takes the opportunity to join us".

McCarthy explained that there are a number of steps he can take to pressure King for his statements.

McCarthy said the language used by King "has no place in America" and added that he wouldn't allow such words to continue "to stand and have any role with us". We all ought to stand up against it, but it's easy when the Democrats condemn a Republican. Joni Ernst tweeted a statement condemning King.

Asked if he was concerned about losing committee positions, he told reporters: "I've had no discussion about that".

King has been assigned to agriculture, small business and judiciary committees, according to his House website.

Recently re-elected to a ninth term, King has since insisted he is an advocate for "Western civilization", not white supremacy or white nationalism. "This is a uniquely fractured time in our nation's history, not our worst but far from our best, and it is only together that we will rebuild the trust we seem to have lost in each other", Scott wrote in The Washington Post.

On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., suggested the chamber will take some punitive action against King.

Bass, in her statement, compared King with President Donald Trump.

He later said he is "simply a nationalist" and condemned "anyone that supports this evil and bigoted ideology" of white nationalism and white supremacy.

Just ahead of last year's midterm elections, the chairman of the House GOP's campaign arm issued an extraordinary public denunciation of him.

"When people with opinions similar to King's open their mouths, they damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole", Scott wrote, calling King's views separate from conservatism "that should be ridiculed at every turn".
