Poland mayor in very serious condition after being stabbed on stage

He wrote: "The attack on the Lord President Pawel Adamowicz is barbarism".

"It is still too early to say that, because the situation is very serious, and still isn't sufficiently stabilised so as to be able to talk about a positive prognosis ... the prognosis regarding his life and health is uncertain".

The attacker reportedly shouted from the stage that he had been wrongly imprisoned when the mayor's former party was in power.

Adamowicz also advocated bringing wounded Syrian children to Gdansk for medical treatment, a plan, however, blocked by the Law and Justice government. "I was jailed but innocent".

She said there was no immediate word about the mayor's condition at the hospital.

Polish blood donors were coming forward in droves on Monday in a bid to save the life of Gdansk's mayor, who needs transfusions after being stabbed in the heart and the abdomen while on stage at a charity event.

Adamowicz has been mayor of Gdansk for two decades and the opposition Civic Platform, the arch-rival of Poland's governing right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, had supported his reelection in 2018 municipal elections.

Interior minister Joachim Brudzinski said Mr Adamowicz was in hospital in very serious condition, calling the stabbing "an act of inexplicable barbarity".

According to eyewitnesses, Adamowicz, 53, was attacked while he was on stage for the finale of the charity concert.

The 27-year-old suspect, who was arrested, is a Gdansk resident. Adamowicz had been on the streets of his city Sunday collecting money for the charity, along with volunteers around the country. "Patel we are with you".

The politician has been mayor of Gdansk for more than 20 years and is part of the democratic opposition which started in the city under Lech Walsea in the 1980s. He left Civic Platform and ran as an independent in his most recent electoral success.

Dr. Jerzy Karpinski, the head doctor of the Gdansk region, told reporters Monday that the mayor is a "relatively young, healthy person with no health issues" and thus he was hopeful he would survive.

As mayor, he is seen as a progressive voice and has supported LGBT rights and tolerance for minorities. He showed solidarity with the Jewish community when Gdansk synagogue had its windows broken a year ago, strongly denouncing the vandalism. "Hope and pray he will recover". The last attack on a politician in Poland was in 2010 in Lodz.

Ciarka said police were checking how the man got hold of a media pass, and whether it was authentic, as it allowed him to get on stage and stab Adamowicz during a popular nationwide charity event.
