Apophis, or 99942 Apophis, as it is officially designated, is expected to come within just 37,600 km of Earth - a tenth of the distance between Earth and the Moon, on 13 April 2029, researchers from the Department of Celestial Mechanics at St. Petersburg State University have warned. The partial phase of the eclipse begins at 7:33 p.m. Sunday, gradually darkening until totality is reached at 8:41 p.m. when the red glow envelopes the moon surface.

Experts say the optimal viewing time will be between 4.41am and 5.43am and that this is the period of totality, where the moon lies entirely in the earth's umbra (full shadow) and will appear red, when it is called a blood moon. It's the "moment of greatest eclipse, when the Moon is halfway through the umbra, occurs", NASA explains.

Total lunar eclipses occur only during full moons.

In recent years, a number of blood moons have captured global attention, causing some to speculate about a possible connection to prophecy and the End Times. "Lunar eclipses. reflect our world", astronomer and podcaster Pamela Gay told in an email. All you have to do is go outside and look up.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the sun and the moon, casting the moon completely in the Earth's shadow and giving it an orangish, "bloody" look. Viewed from the US east coast the moon will enter Earth's umbra just a few minutes after 10:30 P.M., with the full lunar disk falling wholly into shadow for slightly over an hour, beginning at 11:41 P.M.

To describe a lunar eclipse, I like to use a movie theater analogy.

The total phase of the eclipse will be visible from the Western Hemisphere, Europe and the western part of Africa, as well as the northernmost portions of Russian Federation. For viewers in North and South America, the entire eclipse will be visible.

He says the blood name is due to the moon glowing red at total eclipse.

WALTER FREEMAN, PHYSICIST, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY: "Minutes after 10:30 p.m". You probably won't be able to notice the difference in the size or the brightness of the moon, but it is noteworthy enough as an astronomical event.

The "wolf" part is said to originate from a Native American tradition of referring to January's full moon as the Full Wolf Moon.

The moon orbits around the Earth every 27.3 days in a path that is slightly elliptical, meaning it can be closer or farther from Earth throughout the month.
