Bitter cold, howling wind and more snow for Sunday

There will be a low of -29 with a wind chill of -35 in the evening and -40 overnight. Winds will not be quite as strong, but wind chills as cold as -10° are likely once again.

The national service issued the advisory Friday morning, warning of a prolonged period of very cold wind chills with the "bitterly cold Arctic air mass" that is expected to remain in place through the weekend.

On Sunday, it will be sunny early in the morning then a mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries late in the morning and in the afternoon.

There is a high risk of frostbite so take appropriate measures.

The statement adds that "moderate winds of 30 gusting to 50 km/h will accompany the snow resulting in wind chill values in the minus 20 to minus 30 range". Wind chill readings will be between 4 below and 9 above Saturday into Sunday morning, even as wind speeds decrease.

Environment Canada warned the risks were greatest for young children and older adults, as well as people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

They are reminding people that frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
