Super blood moon thrills onlookers with vibrant shade of red

The eclipse, known as a "super blood wolf moon", is when the moon appears to glow red while seeming brighter and closer to Earth than normal.

And while the events alone aren't totally uncommon, when they are combined they make for a spectacular display. The penumbra is the partial outer shadow, and the umbra is the full, dark shadow.

"That's because the dispersed light from all the Earth's sunrises and sunsets falls on the face of the moon at mid-eclipse".

The eerie sight is caused by sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere and illuminating the moon in dramatic fashion, turning it red.

The total part of the eclipse runs for just over an hour, from 4:41am to 5:43am tomorrow (Monday) morning.

Depending on the weather conditions, observers saw a moon that was either blood-red, brick-toned or copper. Instead tribes gave each full moon a nickname to keep track of the seasons and lunar months. According to The Farmer's Almanac, "Wolf" traditionally refers to the first full moon in Jaunaury.
