Here's how to update your iPhone to fix Apple's FaceTime privacy bug

Credit: Tom's GuideIf you've been hiding under a rock for the last two weeks, a flaw in Group FaceTime allowed anyone on the call to hear the audio from any recipient, regardless of whether the person on the other end had picked up.

The new iOS 12.1.4 update is now available on iPhones from 5s and later, iPad Air and later as well as iPod Touch sixth generation.

Apple acted quickly because the bug was particularly easy to exploit: a caller just needed to start a FaceTime video call, and while it was ringing, add themselves (via their phone number or Apple ID) to make it a conference call.

This bug, likely the most serious to hit iPhone and iPad users, has already resulted in at least one lawsuit. The changelog mentions "important security updates", and those include a fix for the Group FaceTime bug that was recently publicized.

In addition to the macOS and iOS updates, Apple also released Shortcuts 2.1.3 to fix vulnerabilities found in Shortcuts for iOS.

While you're there, you can choose to automatically install updates.

Apple has also recognized Grant Thompson, the 14 year old teenager who originally discovered the Group FaceTime bug and tried to report the bug to Apple.

From this menu tap Software Update and check if any updates are ready for your device.

iPhone owners should update their Apple iOS software right now. You will need Wi-Fi access and your battery to be charged above 50 percent, or the device will need to be connected to a charger. The update has also arrived for systems still running macOS High Sierra or macOS Sierra, and is accessible through the Mac App Store's Updates tab, as Apple changed this update method in macOS Mojave.
