Officials confirm 3 more measles cases in Multnomah County

So far in the USA this year, about 80 cases of measles have been reported, with two outbreaks ongoing in Washington and NY states. About 1 in 20 children with measles contracts pneumonia, and in rare cases measles patients may experience encephalitis - inflammation in the brain.

Denton County Public Health confirmed the case Wednesday and is working to identify and contact other people who may have been exposed.

While the USA faces measles outbreaks from NY to Washington state, reigniting discussions about the risk of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children, Madagascar has been fighting the worst eruption of the disease in decades. However, there are 11 people who display symptoms of measles and are awaiting the results of blood work to confirm the diagnosis. In Clark County, the epicenter of the measles outbreak, the immunity rate of residents aged 6-18 is only.

While families in Madagascar have difficulty accessing the measles vaccine, outbreaks in Europe and the US are often linked to vaccine hesitancy - the reluctance of parents to vaccinate their children because of unfounded fears about the treatment.

Graham did say the State Health Department has confirmed that every Washington case of measles since the first confirmed case has matched the same wild strain of measles the first case had. I wish we had vaccination rates up ahead of time. The vaccines include MMR, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, and MMR-V, which also protects against the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. The disease, which has spread rapidly between individuals who never received their childhood vaccines to prevent it, prompted officials to declare a state of emergency out of fear that it would continue to spread.

OR health officials say three more measles cases have been confirmed in Multnomah County, which is home to Portland. Coverage with the first dose of the vaccine also increased slightly to 95%, the highest level since 2013.

Dr. Alan Melnick, Public Health Director and Clark County Health Officer, said that two major factors are causing the outbreak.

With more suspected cases, the outbreak isn't close to being over, officials said. "The recommended 2 doses of the measles vaccine provide even greater protection-97%".

It's not just children that are getting vaccinated in the county, either.

And when it comes to combatting preventative diseases, the CDC says there are no alternatives to vaccination.
