Photo of 'View' host Joy Behar resurfaces amidst blackface scandals

An old video clip has emerged of "The View" co-host Joy Behar trying to explain how - and why - she dressed up as a "beautiful African woman" for Halloween decades ago.

Co-host Raven-Symoné jokingly asked: "Joy, are you Black?"

Behar said she'd applied some "makeup that was a little bit darker than my skin". Behar said that she had dressed up as "a lovely African woman".

The video clip resurfaced this week as the top-ranking Democrats in the Virginia legislature are dealing with scandal over donning blackface in their pasts.

The clip, re-shared by The Wrap media editor Jon Levine, begins with Behar referencing a New York Times Style Magazine op-ed arguing that curly hair was "making a comeback".

"Is that you, Joy?"

"Joy, are you Black?. are you my auntie, Joy?"

In a 2016 episode of "The View", Joy Behar showed this photo of herself from a 1970s-era Halloween party. Moments later, Symoné said, "I love it though".

Northam later insisted he wasn't in the photo.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who's next in line to take Northam's position if the governor were to resign, is now facing an accusation of sexual assault which Fairfax has suggested was leaked by Northam's team.

Another Virginia Democrat, Attorney General Mark Herring, who led the charge in calling for Northam's resignation, was also forced to acknowledge that he, too, had worn blackface when he dressed as a rapper during a party at the University of Virginia in 1980 when he was 19.

In October, Today show personality Megyn Kelly was axed by NBC after she defended people wearing blackface on a segment about Halloween.

Ironically, Kelly's comments merely discuss the type of costume Behar actually wore and proudly showed off to a live audience. The Democratic leader later said he was not in the photo and hadn't seen it before.

Critics were quick to point out that NBC cut ties with host Megyn Kelly past year after she created a furor by suggesting that it was OK for white people to wear blackface on Halloween. "She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day, and I don't know how that got racist on Halloween".
