Tulsi Gabbard officially announces 2020 presidential run

Even though Gabbard was criticized for her past comments on the LGBT community, one supporter said he believes her change of heart.

Gabbard was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and again assigned to the 29th Brigade Special Troops Battalion of the Hawaii Army National Guard-this time to serve as the Military Police Platoon Leader, and she continues her service as a Major in the Army National Guard.

She announced her candidacy for the presidential elections in Hawaii, a state she represents in Congress, saying she would stand up to "powerful, self-serving politicians and greedy corporations".

Questioned about her stance on Assad by NBC News' Kasie Hunt, Gabbard, one of Hawaii's two House members, said Assad is not an enemy of the USA because, she said, he does not pose an immediate threat to the country.

These remarks could haunt Gabbard along the campaign trail given some of the previous criticism she's faced on the subject of Syria and Assad.

After making headlines in 2016 by quitting a leadership post at the Democratic National Committee over allocating advantages in presidential debates to Hillary Clinton, Gabbard then endorsed Bernie Sanders for the 2016 nomination, becoming one of the few members of Congress to do so. "And that's exactly what we talked about".

Though she's been progressive in some of her stances, she has some more conservative viewpoints and has made controversial statements in the past. "I'm deeply sorry for having said and believed them", she said.

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who kicked off her 2020 presidential campaign Saturday, has rejected an endorsement from former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

Gabbard pointed to her congressional record in support of LGBTQ rights as a contrast to the household in which she grew up, where her father was outspoken against gay rights.

Duke, who has expressed anti-Semitic views, also tweeted that Gabbard "is now the only Presidential candidate who doesn't want to send White children off to die in Israel".

In response, Gabbard accused NBC of using "journalistic fraud" in a smear campaign against her.

The NBC report, published Saturday, said that analysis shows "the main English-language news sites employed by Russian Federation in its 2016 election meddling shows Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii ... has become a favorite of the sites Moscow used when it interfered in 2016".

During Wednesday's "Morning Joe" on MSNBC, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) lashed out at NBC News for running a report saying the same Russian Federation propaganda machine that tried to hack the 2016 presidential election is backing Gabbard's 2020 run.
