Edmonton Oilers: Peter Chiarelli’s NHL Career is Over

Peter Chiarelli has been fired as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, according to multiple media reports.

Nicholson will now oversee hockey operations, which includes finding the next permanent general manager.

He said the organizational decision was made this week to fire Chiarelli, who was told at the second intermission of a loss Tuesday night to Detroit so he could quietly leave the arena.

But Oilers have faltered since then, missing the post-season a year ago and now sitting outside a playoff spot.

If somebody in the organization figured that signing Mikko Koskinen to a $13.5 million USA three-year extension Monday would stop the latest skid or change the conversation, it didn't happen.

"He really felt that he had let the organization down in not having this team in the playoffs. I think they can be better", Chiarelli said when Hitchcock was hired.

The Oilers fired head coach Todd McLellan in November and replaced him with Ken Hitchcock. "We had a down year, but I talked to Peter, and he has a plan to get us back in the playoffs next season", he said.

Edmonton enters the all-star break one game under.500 at 23-24-3 and doesn't play again until February 2. NY traded the other pick to Tampa Bay and got another first-round pick and selected Anthony Beauvillier.

Chiarelli traded 2010 top pick Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils one-for-one for defenseman Adam Larsson.

"We have a lot of work to do here in the organization over this break", Nicholson said.

He signed Milan Lucic to a $42 million, six-year contract that now appears to be unmovable.

Such is the reason Peter Chiarelli was making fringe moves leading up to his firing, which included acquiring defencemen Alexander Petrovic, Brandon Manning and picking up Colby Cave on waivers.

Chiarelli, the former Bruins GM, had taken over the job with the Oilers in 2015. But his tenure in Edmonton was filled with controversial transactions, a failure to surround star Connor McDavid with sufficient talent and a lack of success on the ice, as the Oilers advanced to the second round of the playoffs in 2017 but otherwise failed to make the postseason in each of Chiarelli's seasons at the helm.

Chiarelli was expected to give the woebegone Oilers steady leadership with McDavid. On Monday, Chiarelli signed goalie Mikko Koskinen to a three-year extension worth $13.5 million that also included trade protection.
