Spotify tells users with ad blockers to get lost

Users' acceptance of the new terms "will be deemed to have been granted if you continue to use the Spotify service after the effective date", the company said.

Spotify updated its terms of services to prohibit ad blockers, bots, and fraudulent streams.

When Spotify went public past year, selling its shares on Wall Street for the first time, it disclosed to investors that about 2 million users deployed technology created to "suppress advertisements".

"Spotify respects intellectual property rights and expects you to do the same", it said.

Spotify account users who are using ad blockers and are flagged by the music-streaming platform are expected to be disabled by March 1, 2019.

Many ad-supported websites and streaming services already prevent users from viewing content if an ad-blocker is installed, typically by alerting a customer to this and requesting that they turn ad-blocking off in order to read the page or watch a video. No warnings, and no second chances.

For those that don't want to opt for Spotify's monthly Premium charge, the free package has always been a blessing.

Spotify is looking to expand as well with its recent acquisitions of Anchor and Gimlet Media as part of its effort to build its own podcasting network.
