Trump orders flags at half-staff to honor Rep. John Dingell

- As word spread of former MI congressman John Dingell's death, those who were close to him took a step back at his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

He has also become active on Twitter in his retirement, regularly tweeting about politics and the University of MI football team he loves.

It "is a source of great satisfaction to know that she is among the largest group of women to have ever served in the Congress (as she busily recruits more)", he wrote.

Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi, accompanied by former congressman John Dingell, marks the 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid on Capitol Hill on July 29, 2015 in Washington, DC. In 2014, Dingell told Politico Magazine, "If you look, you'll find that what I did was make these laws tolerant for industry".

Dingell, who served in the U.S. House for 59 years before retiring in 2014, died Thursday at his home in Dearborn, said his wife, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

"I want to thank Dearborn firefighters and chief Joe Murray and Dearborn police and chief Ron Haddad".

"Among his achievements", the Times reports, "were enhancing the safety of blood banks, bottled water and pacemakers and exposing waste, fraud and abuse throughout the federal government". Sharp as hell and tougher than a $2 steak.

Critics called him overpowering and intimidating, a reputation boosted by the head of a 500-pound wild boar that looked at visitors to his Washington office.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2017, John recalled his first glimpse of McCain when the latter was then a Republican freshman on the floor of the legislature.

"Everywhere I go, I run into people have dealt with my father." he said.

John said the pair didn't work on many issues together but crossed the aisle on some.

John's social media was serious and laid-back, even playful sometimes, mixing sports analysis with politics and messages to supporters.

He employed its Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, where he was the chairman, to initiate investigations that eventually led to the perjury conviction of Michael Deaver, a former top aide to President Ronald Reagan; and the resignation of Anne Gorsuch Burford as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. "I remember he said shooting a rifle is a lot like legislating", former Ohio Rep. Dennis Eckhart told The Associated Press in 2009.

And much as I have found Twitter to be a useful means of expression, some occasions merit more than 280 characters.

In retirement, Dingell remained engaged on Twitter, where he was a prolific critic of President Donald Trump. A funeral will be held at a local church Tuesday.
