At least 70 die in India after drinking spurious liquor

Over 200 people have been detained and cases registered against the persons for manufacturing and selling liquor without authorization.

NEW DELHI, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) - As death toll mounts in two northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, police have launched a massive crackdown on the illegal dens of spurious liquor manufacturing places, officials said Sunday.

Eight more deaths were reported in another tragedy blamed on tainted liquor in Kushinagar district, also in Uttar Pradesh, regional official BD Gupta told the dpa news agency.

The city of Saharanpur's top administrative officer said a man had distributed some 30 pouches of the poisonous liquor that caused the deaths, Indian broadcaster NDTV reported.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered strict action in the matter.

Officials said the liquor was first consumed in neighboring Uttarakhand where villagers from Saharanpur attended a funeral, and was then smuggled back to Saharanpur district by a villager who then sold it to others.

Several officials associated with excise and police departments have been suspended. They seized hundreds of litres of tainted liquor in raids.

According to health officials around 150 others were being treated for severe side effects from the hooch in the twin states.

The Saharanpur police, who are working on the assumption that the alcohol may have come from the same source, arrested 30 people, many of them bootleggers.

Almost 100 people have died in Northern India after drinking tainted bootleg liquor.
