'El Chapo' Found Guilty on All Ten Counts

A federal jury in NY has found Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera guilty of all 10 criminal counts against him, including the top charge of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise.

Now, the jury has handed in their verdict, finding the Sinaloa Cartel's leader guilty on all ten counts. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

In this courtroom drawing, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, second from left, seated with his defense attorneys, listens to testimony that was read back to the jury, Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, in NY.

Guzman leaned back in his chair Tuesday to catch the eye of his wife, who gave him a subtle thumbs-up, when the jury was discharged from a federal courthouse in Brooklyn. His wife shed tears.

They heard how Guzman made a name for himself in the 1980s as "El Rapido", the speedy one, by building cross-border tunnels that allowed him to move cocaine from Mexico into the United States faster than anyone else. Among them were Guzman's former Sinaloa lieutenants, a computer encryption expert and a Colombian cocaine supplier who underwent extreme plastic surgery to disguise his appearance.

U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan lauded the jury's meticulous attention to detail.

Estimates of how much money Guzman made from drugs vary.

Guzmán, once listed on Forbes' Billionaires List, has always been a slippery and near-mythical figure. It later dropped him from the list, saying it was too hard to quantify his assets.

Jeffrey Lichtman said outside a Brooklyn courthouse Tuesday the defense "fought like complete savages" at the USA drug-trafficking trial and will "continue to fight" for Guzman.

The trial cast a harsh glare on the corruption that allowed the cartel to flourish. Colombian trafficker Alex Cifuentes caused a stir by testifying that former Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto took a $100-million bribe from Guzman.

A defense lawyer says Guzman's conviction is "devastating". The same day, he grinned broadly at audience member Alejandro Edda, the Mexican actor who plays Guzman in the Netflix drama "Narcos".

This came after his second, short-lived escape from prison.

The drug boss escaped from prison twice - once in 2001 by hiding in a laundry bin, and again in 2014 when he escaped through tunnels on a specially adapted small motorcycle.

But the Mexican government says he blew his cover through a series of slip ups, including an attempt to make a movie about his life.
