Iranians mark anniversary of victory day in 1979 revolution

Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution initially inspired both Islamic militants and Islamists across the Mideast.

"I do not ignore the Iranian regime's threats, but I'm not impressed by them, either", Netanyahu said in a taped statement.

"Were this regime to make the bad mistake of trying to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa, it would not succeed, but it would mean that they had celebrated their last Revolution Day".

"The US should know that we would raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground in the event of a military attack on us", General Yadollah Javani, head of the guard's political bureau, was quoted as saying.

"We have not asked and will not ask for permission to develop different types of. missiles, and will continue our path and our military power", President Hassan Rouhani said in a speech at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square. "However, this would be the last anniversary of the revolution that they celebrate".

Tens of thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to mark the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Soldiers, students, clerics and black-clad women holding small children thronged streets across Iran, many with portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi'ite cleric who toppled the Shah in an Islamic uprising that still haunts the West.

The state has played up this year's anniversary as 40 is symbolic of maturity in the Islamic tradition and the age at which Prophet Mohammed received revelations from God.

Iran displayed its ballistic missile capabilities during a parade marking the anniversary, including the Zolfaqar, a ground-to-ground missile with a 700 kilometre (435 mile) range and the Qiam, with a range of 800 km, according to Tasnim news agency.

Iran even holds an annual "Death to America" rally every November to commemorate the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in 1979, leading to a 444-day hostage crisis in which the Iranian regime held 52 Americans prisoner.

Prices of food, especially meat, have risen a lot since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.

The Iranian people "will not stop saying "Death to America" as long as the USA acts malicious" toward Iran, Khamenei said, referring to Trump's State of the Union address in which the American president, among other things, said: "We will not avert our eyes from a regime that chants death to America".

Today, Iran enjoys growing influence through proxies in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, raising concerns in Sunni Saudi Arabia, which accuses its rival of trying to dominate the Middle East. Tehran denies that.
