Newborn baby pulled from storm drain after people heard crying

The mood in Newlands East is bitter-sweet this afternoon following the miraculous discovery and safe rescuing of a newborn baby girl, who was found in a storm water drain, this morning.

The baby was stabalised on scene before she was transported to hospital.

Rescue teams secure a trench in order to reach a newborn baby that was presumably dumped down a stormwater drain in Newlands East on Monday. Rescuers were able to make their way down the drain pipes and locate the baby. She is basically stable enough for transfer to one of the base hospitals where they can sort out the social side.

Various emergency services were involved in the wonderful rescue.

Rescue Care said the circumstances leading to the baby ending up in the drain were still unknown.Police were investigating the matter, South African media reported.

KZN health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo‚ who went to the hospital to see the newborn‚ said the baby would be moved to a smaller hospital‚ then discharged to a place of safety.

Emergency services had to dig down to the pipe where the baby was trapped, before cutting the pipe and carefully extracting the baby.
