China trade talks resume

President Trump has said he will not agree to any trade deal with China without meeting with President Xi first, though this meeting is not expected to happen before the March deadline.

Negotiators from the two countries are meeting this week in Beijing, with USA officials pressing China to commit to deeper reforms to a state-driven economic model that they say hurts American companies.

US tariffs on $200 billion worth of imports from China are scheduled to rise to 25 percent from 10 percent if the two sides can not reach a deal by the deadline, increasing pain and costs in sectors from consumer electronics to agriculture. Trump has threatened to more than double the rate of tariffs on US$200 billion in Chinese imports. They're inching closer to a March 1 deadline to come to an agreement.

"But at some point, I expect to meet with President Xi, who I have a lot of respect for and like a lot, and make the parts of the deal that the group is unable to make", Trump said.

Aides to Trump say this week's talks are important as they need to demonstrate credible progress to both the president and financial markets. The situation could get worse as a truce on tariffs is set to expire in early March.

A round of talks at the end of January ended with some progress reported, but no deal and USA declarations that much more work was needed.
