Newborn Found in Middle of Road

An investigation has been launched to find out who abandoned the newborn baby. The infant was then hospitalized and is OK, the CHP said.

"He was approached by a female driving a white, smaller SUV".

A newborn baby girl was found alone, lying in a California road during freezing temperatures early Monday morning.

The little girl was in onesie pyjamas with her umbilical cord still attached.

The hours-old baby girl was dressed in a soiled onesie and left "on the centerline of a roadway".

Newspaper carrier Aurelio Fuentes discovered the infant lying in the middle of a Madera County road just after 4 a.m. "OK, you know, this is a baby. There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said.

Acting US Defense Secretary makes unannounced visit to Afghanistan
The death toll of US service members in Afghanistan has surpassed 2,400 since the United States invaded the country in 2001. Afghanistan and neighboring countries are concerned about the effect of a sudden withdrawal of US forces on the region.

The baby was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Valley Children's Hospital for treatment and is doing well, according to a statement by Madera County Sheriff's Office. Authorities are now investigating the identity and whereabouts of the mother.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation now and working to track down the newborn's mother.

It is believed the newspaper carrier arrived a few minutes later to discover the dumped baby on the road. Ironically, there was a staffed fire station within a mile or two, and Valley Children's Hospital is very nearby. Witnesses say she is possibly a young Hispanic woman in her early 20s. Although the baby is in good condition, she was admitted to the NICU.

She was said to have been driving a white SUV but details of her physical description are "unknown".

Pogue said the situation was inexplicable and also noted that any newborn infants can be safely surrendered at any designated "safe surrender site" - a fire station or hospital - without any questions asked or the mother facing any charges.
