Registration mistake turned back New Zealand flight to China:The Asahi Shimbun

"We've not received any communication of this nature", an Air New Zealand spokeswoman said at the time.

Air NZ flight 289, which was bound for Shanghai, was forced to turn back to Auckland after several hours in the air because Chinese authorities deemed that its application to land in China contained wording that indicated Taiwan is an independent country, according to sources cited by Stuff.

However the issue which caused the Air New Zealand flight to return to Auckland was likely to have happened irrespective of the current questions, due to China's sensitivity. In a statement it said that the Boeing 787-9 was new to the airline's fleet and did not have the correct paperwork.

The rescheduled flight landed in Shanghai on Monday.

The incident has created a potential headache for New Zealand's government, which has recently suffered frosty relations with Beijing.

This was a plane flying in the middle of the night, on weekend, to a country which only a few years ago blocked all meat imports from New Zealand for more than a week because the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries had been rebranded the Ministry for Primary Industries, meaning export paperwork changed slightly.
