Farm Bureau Statement on Confirmation of EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler

The Senate voted along party lines Thursday to confirm Andrew Wheeler as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, putting an official stamp on his leadership at the agency. Since President Donald Trump announced Wheeler's nomination early last month, critics have warnedthat he "will continue Pruitt's toxic legacy".

But most Republicans, including Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman John Barrasso of Wyoming, said Wheeler had eased the burden on industry without undermining key environmental protections.

Tom Udall of New Mexico said Wheeler was "nominated to unravel and undo the environmental protections that are now in place".

Andrew Wheeler testifies at a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on January 16, 2019. Senator Susan Collins of ME was the lone Republican to vote against the nomination. She said in a statement that, unlike Pruitt, Wheeler "understands the mission of the EPA and acts in accordance with ethical standards".

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.

Collins also voted in 2017 against Pruitt, who resigned past year amid a series of ethics scandals.

Since Wheeler became the acting administrator last July, he has released plans to unwind rising emissions and attendant fuel economy standards enacted under President Obama, and to rescind California's half-century-old authority to set tighter emissions standards than the federal government.

But Wheeler has brought a level of stability to the agency that didn't exist under Pruitt, keeping a relatively low profile while continuing to make progress towards meeting the Trump administration's policy goals for the agency. The perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known collectively as PFAS, have been linked to health threats ranging from cancer to decreased fertility. "I believe he will do an excellent job leading the agency".

Like Collins, Manchin also said he was concerned at EPA's attempt to undo rules created to limit emissions of mercury, which can damage the brains of infants and young children.

Indiana Senator Todd Young said, "Mr. Wheeler has demonstrated an ability to find reasonable solutions to hard environmental issues".

"Wheeler wants to turn the EPA into a wish-granting service for polluters, no matter the cost to public health or wildlife". "But it's only a matter of time before his dirty dealings land him in the same trash heap as his predecessor". Mitch McConnell, who has received over $2 million in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry and thousands from coal interests throughout his legislative career, joined with the majority voting in favor of Wheeler's confirmation.

At his confirmation hearing in January, Wheeler highlighted dozens of significant rules that the EPA has begun to roll back in the past two years, and he made clear to lawmakers that he meant to continue the Trump administration's reversal of environmental regulations.
