SpaceX astronaut capsule launched on ISS test mission

America's newest capsule for astronauts rocketed from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Saturday toward the International Space Station on a high-stakes test flight.

The only passenger aboard the capsule is a life-size test dummy, named Ripley from the Alien movies.

The rocket blasted off without incident at 2:49 am (0749 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, lighting up Florida's coastline. The mission is incredibly important for both SpaceX and NASA, but you're going to have to get up pretty darn early in the morning to see it take off.

Saturday's launch, which was celebrated with cheers and applause in the control room at Kennedy Space Center, comes after multiple delays pushed the maiden flight back from an expected launch in 2018.

The plan calls for the capsule to dock with the International Space Station on Sunday morning. The capsule is fitted with enhanced parachutes and is set to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite SpaceX's success at recovering and reusing its rockets, NASA is insisting on brand new boosters from SpaceX for the crew capsule flights. In 2014, as part of the "commercial crew" program, the agency awarded contracts worth a combined $6.8 billion to SpaceX and Boeing to develop spacecraft capable of flying up to four astronauts to the station at a time.

Saturday's flight aims to test the vessel's reliability and safety in real-life conditions.

Nasa chief Jim Bridenstine said it was a new era where "we are looking forward to be being one customer, as an agency and as a country".

It pays Russian Federation to get its people up to the ISS orbiting research facility at a cost of $82 million per head for a round trip. It will not be tested until April, in a mission similar to SpaceX's.

For SpaceX, this flight is a key milestone in its 17-year history.

NASA's associate administrator for human exploration Bill Gerstenmaier said using a private company for astronaut launches would not compromise on standards.

Steve Stich, NASA launch manager and deputy manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program said the test was "vital" for reestablishing NASA's human spaceflight programme.

A veteran of two spaceflights, Garrett Reisman left NASA in 2011 to play a senior role in the development of the Crew Dragon spacecraft at SpaceX until a year ago. Now a professor of human spaceflight at the University of Southern California, Reisman said the atmosphere was electric. "And we'll be ready when SpaceX and NASA are ready for us to fly it".

Its Falcon 9 rockets have resupplied the space station 15 times in seven years, even though one of them blew up in 2015.
