Fox News rebukes host Jeanine Pirro for Ilhan Omar hijab comments

On her Fox News show Saturday, Pirro suggested without evidence that Omar - the first Somali-American and one of the first of two Muslim women elected to Congress - is not committed to upholding USA laws because, among other things, she wears an Islamic headscarf.

"I thought yesterday's vote by the House was disgraceful because the Democrats have become an anti-Israel party", Trump told reporters on Friday.

"She's not getting this anti-Israel sentiment doctrine from the Democrat Party", Pirro said about the freshman congresswoman.

Pirro questioned whether Omar's wearing a hijab indicated her adherence to Sharia law.

Fox News' chief executive, Suzanne Scott, had reportedly scolded producers of the network's shows past year, encouraging them to run a tighter ship in terms of incendiary comments.

Fox News has on many previous occasions has tolerated Islamophobic and birther comments from its hosts and commentators.

Pirro would go on to add, "this is Sharia-adherent behavior and it is somewhat disturbing if she is someone who is Sharia-compliant".

CNN's Brian Stelter reported on Monday that Fox News right wing commentators Tucker Carlson and Jeanine Pirro's ugly comments about women and Muslims were undercutting the networks efforts to promote its news division - and as a result the network was growing increasingly anxious about its advertisers. "They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly", the network said.

In a brief tweet on Monday, Omar shared her gratitude with Fox News for its response.

"I've seen a lot of comments about my opening statement from Saturday night's show and I did not call Rep. Omar un-American", Pirro said.

'I invite Rep. Omar to come on my show any time to discuss all of the important issues facing America today'.

According to her website, Omar advocates "a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis" while calling for "uplift [ing] the voices of Palestinians demanding an end to the occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and end the siege of Gaza".

"Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes", Omar said in a statement.

In a much earlier tweet, from 2012, Omar wrote that Israel had "hypnotized the world". "Our nation is having a hard conversation and we believe this is great progress". Pirro asked Satuday night. "Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia Law - which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?" As with all major religions, scholars have interpreted the Quran and other religious texts in myriad ways, and Muslims from different sects, regions and countries practice differently and with varying degrees of observance. Pirro's comments echo a common anti-Islamic belief that Muslims have allegiances to Sharia law over American law.
