Greens again encourage students to skip school to protest

Encinal Junior & Senior High School students Emma Kohler and Olivia Brune organized the march in partnership with the Sierra Club and Political and Proud.

Since December, climate-themed protests led by school students have taken place across the country as part of the global Fridays for Futures movement inspired by 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. "We can not teach on a dead planet".

How involved were you with the climate strike that happened at the end of a year ago? In the face of a climate crisis and no adequate government response, taking action is clearly the responsible choice.

"Students throughout history have been a critical driving force of social movements".

School Strike For Climate NZ organisers say hundreds of students from across the country will join other young people around the world in striking from school to send a strong message to older generations that inaction on climate change will no longer be tolerated. "The students leading this movement have demonstrated courage in standing up to the powerful forces that want to protect the massive profits being made by maintaining the status quo". On March 15th an worldwide school strike will send a clear message to policy makers around the world for urgent action against ecological collapse.

Youth and global speakers, as well as folk-activist musician Luke Wallace, will be opening the event at the Legislature beginning at 12 p.m. Students will then take to the streets at 1 block traffic at Fort and Douglas Street, where many of Canada's big banks, which continue to invest in fossil fuels, are located. "It is important that normal process is followed if there was an absence on the day for the safety of the students, and to keep families informed of the actions of their children".

"I school striked for the climate".

'I'm appalled that this teacher, while being paid by the taxpayer, has sought to undertake political activity, ' Mr Stokes said. "So we have a much higher chance of doing that if we bring everyone with us", she said. So instead of looking for hope, look for action.

"These young people are learning in their schools about the danger of climate change ... and these kids are schooling us now", she said.

She says the world is essentially in meltdown, and the impact of a few hours off school pales in comparison to the likely impact of climate change on the lives of today's children.

"We recognise, as adults, researchers and as educators, that it is important to respect youth leadership and stand with young people as allies, but not in front". We want to see someone that supports real action on climate change, and responds to the needs of our community.
