Former India worldwide Sanjay Manjrekar has slammed Vijay Shankar and raised concern for the team's middle order in the upcoming world cup after they slumped to a 3-2 ODI series defeat at the hands of Australia at home.

Swashbuckling Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday added another feather to his already illustrious cap, equalling former cricketer Sourav Ganguly's record of being the third fastest cricketer to reach 8000 runs in ODI cricket.

India threw Pant (16) in the line of fire by promoting him to number four but the local boy, who desperately required a substantial performance to back his claim for a spot in the World Cup squad, lasted only 16 balls.

Reduced to 132 for six inside 30 overs, India were out of the contest and Kedar Jadhav (44) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (46) managed to reduce the margin of defeat.

Zampa's wonderful over just after the midway point proved crucial as two key India batsmen were removed, Rohit and Jadeja both stumped by Carey.

Opting to bat, Australia got off to another good start as Khawaja and Aaron Finch (27) put on 76 runs for the opening stand. But Khawaja and Handscomb denied the hosts any further opportunities. Usman Khawaja top-scored 100. The left-hander hit 10 fours and two sixes before driving straight to Kohli.

Jadeja returned to get the unsafe Glenn Maxwell for one and Handscomb was caught behind off Shami as Australia slipped to 182-4.

Australia were placed comfortably at 175 for one and set for a kill in slog overs, but India came back when Bhuneshwar got rid off Khawaja in the last ball of the 33rd over.

A collapse of 6-54 followed Khawaja's dismissal then Cummins and Jhye Richardson ensured the tail wagged, taking 42 runs off the final four overs.

This was India's final ODI before the 2019 World Cup.

Australia has another chance to impress ahead of the World Cup with another five-match series against Pakistan in the UAE starting on Friday March 22.
