Lawyer Told Cohen 'Sleep Well Tonight' After Talking to Giuliani

Additionally, a separate source described as "familiar with the emails" said that Trump's legal team was trying to keep Cohen from flipping on the president and "hinting that a pardon could be in the mix at some point".

"That was taken in the context of his job as the acting attorney general where there is discussions in the normal personnel issues".

The House Oversight Committee chairman on Wednesday rejected Republican calls for a new investigation into President Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen and whether he again lied to Congress.

Collins also dismissed a Nadler statement that Whitaker was involved in conversations about firing one or more US attorneys as "normal personnel issues".

Nadler said Whitaker's response about the Cohen case came after he was pressed in the closed-door session about CNN reporting in December that Trump twice vented to Whitaker about federal prosecutors who referenced the President's actions in crimes Cohen pleaded guilty to.

Two Republican staff members in the room backed up Collins' version.

They said federal prosecutors in NY say Cohen sought employment in the Trump administration - something Cohen repeatedly denied in the hearing. "To imply it would imply anything else besides that is really an overreach", Collins said.

Nadler also said Whitaker told the lawmakers that he was involved in conversations about U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman's recusal from the Cohen investigation in the Southern District of NY and about whether its campaign finance case involving hush money payments to two women who claim they had affairs with Trump had gone too far.

But Nadler himself told Whitaker Wednesday that he no longer feared Whitaker had tampered with Mueller's work or fed information to the president, according to one of the Republican counsels who attended the unrecorded meeting.

But after the hearing before the House Oversight Committee last month, Cohen attorney Lanny Davis admitted that Cohen "directed his attorney" to ask about a possible pardon.

Nadler said after the public testimony that his answers were 'unsatisfactory, incomplete or contradicted by other evidence.' In the letter sent to the Justice Department, Nadler said Whitaker didn't offer clear responses about his communications with the White House and was inconsistent about what questions he refused to answer.

Nadler said he wasn't sure what the next steps would be after hearing from Whitaker.

The meeting Wednesday with Whitaker was private.
