Ukrainian hackers used quizzes to leak over 60K Facebook users' data

Ukrainian hackers used quizzes to leak over 60K Facebook users' data

"As a result of installing the malicious extensions, the app users effectively compromised their own browsers because... the malicious extensions were created to scrape information and inject unauthorized advertisements when the app users visited Facebook or other social networking sites", Facebook wrote. More than 60,000 internet browsers used by Facebook users had been compromised, it said.

To check to see what apps Facebook sends your information to, log in to your Facebook account and click "Apps and Websites" under settings.

But crucially, that makes it quite different from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which involved Facebook voluntarily giving up too much data to developers, rather than needing to be hoodwinked by a browser plug in.

Facebook, in its lawsuit filed on Friday, alleged that the Kiev-based entrepreneurs violated Californian and federal anti-hacking laws, and sued them for fraud and breach of Facebook's terms of service.

If a user then followed through and installed the malicious browser extension, the extension would gain access to the user's Facebook page. But the suits give Facebook a chance to defend itself against charges of being lax with privacy and security, explaining how users have been victimized by hackers - not the platform itself.

Building collapses in Lagos, school kids trapped, many feared dead
The building was in the Ita-faji area of Lagos island, the original heart of the lagoon city before it expanded onto the mainland. Building collapses are all too common in Nigeria, where new construction often goes up without regulatory oversight.

Facebook is also said to be seeking other financial relief for its investigation into the defendants and restitution of any funds that the two received through the scheme.

It's been a roller coaster year for Facebook investors. It then alerted browser makers so the malicious extensions could be removed.

The hackers were uncovered after they claimed to have access to 120 million Facebook accounts.

The scheme seemingly wouldn't have worked, however, if Facebook hadn't approved the hackers as developers who could use its Facebook Login feature. CEO Mark Zuckerburg recently announced that Facebook is going through a major change of course, with more attention being paid to the privacy of users. He promised to achieve a world that will protect people's information more.

Last week also, the company also filed a lawsuit against four Chinese-owned companies for selling fake accounts & user engagement. In both cases, the defendants are overseas and seem unlikely to suffer serious consequences.
