Bangladesh cricket team forced to flee Christchurch Mosque after shooting incident

Bangladesh's cricket team escaped unscathed after a deadly shooting at a mosque in New Zealand, an official told AFP on Friday.

Police have confirmed they responded to a call, and television outlets in New Zealand and Australia have extensively reported on the shooting over the last hour.

Police placed all of the city's schools on lockdown amid the incident. calling a "serious ongoing firearms incident".

People in central Christchurch have been urged to stay indoors and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to 111.

A gunman has entered the crowded Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand at about 1.45pm local time.

Peneha said he then went into the mosque to try and help.

After reports of casualties at the mosque, another mosque had been evacuated, said local media.

"There was a shooting, people came into the mosque during prayers with an automatic rifle and opened fire within the mosque during prayers", she said.

One man said the scene at the mosque was chaotic with as many as 40 people injured.

The team is in Christchurch to play New Zealand in a third cricket test starting on Saturday.
