Bernie Sanders aide defends Omar with term seen as anti-Semitic, apologizes

"In a conversation on Facebook, I used some language that I see now was insensitive". In the first several weeks of her term, she was censured (sort of) twice for repeating the same or similar comments, all anti-Semitic tropes about Jewish legislators being subject to "dual loyalties" to both the United States and Israel.

She deleted the Facebook posts after Politico confronted her about her remarks.

"I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country", she said.

Since being sworn in in January, Omar has accused some of her fellow lawmakers of dual loyalty, or "allegiance to a foreign country", due to their support for Israel. They've heard one anti-Semitic comment too many, and they're ready to take the next step to remove her from Congress.

Rockets Fired From Gaza At Tel Aviv, Explosions Heard: Israeli Military

However, "While she has created a significant amount of controversy for herself and said things that have offended many Americans, I'm not sure that one could make the case that she is in trouble yet", said Mike Erlandson, the former chair of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and the former chief of staff to ex-congressman Martin Sabo, a Democrat who challenged Omar's predecessor in 2006.

"I welcome debate in Congress based on the merits of policy, but it's unacceptable and deeply offensive to call into question the loyalty of fellow American citizens due to their political views, including support for the US-Israel relationship", Engel said in the statement. Potential candidates include state Sen. But Hunegs said Omar didn't care.

It is a tall task to unseat Omar, however, considering only two House members from Minnesota have ever lost primaries.

Sanders, who is Jewish, defended Omar in a statement last week. "We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel", the Vermont independent said. "Ilhan Omar went from being a Somalian refugee to a fearless Congresswoman on the hill, and has demonstrated that she is willing to learn", she continued.
