Google Introduces AI-based Lookout App for Visually Impaired

Google Introduces AI-based Lookout App for Visually Impaired

Well, the app is now officially available to install and explore by the users of Google's Pixel Smartphone users.

Lookout is now available for the Pixels in the United States and in English, though Google says it's looking forward to expanding it to more countries, languages, and platforms later. The app was designed for the visually challenged people and was based on Google's machine learning algorithms.

In a blog post announcing the launch, Google points out that, once the app is started (which can be done by asking Google's Assistant to "start Lookout") there's no need to tap any further buttons.

Google has launched its Lookout app, which helps blind and visually impaired people to see by identifying the objects around them.

To use Lookout optimally, Google recommended that the user's device be placed on a lanyard around the user's neck or in the front pocket of a shirt. Once a mode is selected, the app detects what and where objects are in the real world. Users can open Lookout, select one of the three modes, and lookout will detect nearby objects, people, and text as they move through a space.

The app is now available to download at the Google Play Store for all Pixel devices in the US.

That's obviously because this product has some insane ambitious goals, using the camera and sensors on your phone to "assist people who are blind or have low vision".

Google does mention that, "As with any new technology, Lookout will not always be 100 percent flawless". So, what do you think of this new approach by Google for visually impaired? The 'Shopping' mode is to help with barcodes and currency, and the 'Quick' mode is best for sorting mail and reading signs and labels.
