'Huge lifeline' as India court scraps Sreesanth's life ban for fixing

'Huge lifeline' as India court scraps Sreesanth's life ban for fixing

Calling the ban on Sreesanth playing cricket "unfair", senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for the cricketer, told the bench that "nowhere in the world, life ban has been imposed on a cricketer like this". It's six years and I haven't played cricket, which was my life.I hope that the BCCI respects the verdict of the country's highest court and allows me to at least get back to the cricket field.

The Supreme Court on Friday set aside the BCCI disciplinary committee's order of 2013 imposing a life ban on cricketer S Sreesanth. This comes after the Supreme Court, on March 1, reserved its order on a plea by the cricketer, against the Kerala High Court judgement, which had affirmed the ban imposed by the disciplinary committee, BCCI. The Supreme Court also asked the cricket board to reconsider Sreesanth's punishment within the next three months.

The Supreme Court further said that its order should have no effect on criminal proceedings pending against S Sreesanth. However, in two months, the High Court allowed BCCI's appeal and restored the ban.

The top court though maintained that he is guilty of betting/match-fixing.

The former cricketer was banned for life for his alleged involvement in spot-fixing during the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL). "The punishment period has already been completed as I have been banned for nearly six years", said Sreesanth. However, he had told the court in the last hearing on January 30 that the bookie tried to drag him into spot-fixing but he did not fall for it. His counsel had argued that as per allegations, Sreesanth was supposed to concede 14 runs in an over but he gave away 13 runs and the commentary during the match reflected he had not bowled loose deliveries in that over. As many as 36 accused in the spot-fixing case, including Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila, were discharged by the trial court here in July 2015. I now really hope that BCCI too will do justice to him.
