Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton is best known for directing the movie Short Term 12, an independent film about a supervisor of a group home for troubled teenagers. It is clear that after Marvel Studios' unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, Kevin Feige's next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves with ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera.

Cretton, who is now directing the Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan movie "Just Mercy", has been officially hired to direct "Shang-Chi".

Deadline's report stresses that Marvel is looking to handle Shang-Chi in a manner similar to Black Panther.

He is now directing "Just Mercy", an adaptation of lawyer and civil rights advocate Bryan Stevenson's memoir, featuring Larson and Michael B. Jordan.

Marvel Studios' first Asian superhero movie Shang-Chi now has a director with Destin Daniel Cretton, who is directing Just Mercy, a film he wrote that happens to star Captain Marvel's Brie Larson and Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan.

Shang-Chi is the creation of Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, who made his debut in 1973.

Initially created during the martial arts cinema craze of the 1970s, Shang-Chi is now positioned as a milestone character for Marvel's ever-expanding cinematic universe.

Larson first worked with Cretton when she starred in his second film, Short Term 12. More recently, Shang-Chi has appeared as a member of Heroes for Hire and various iterations of The Avengers.

Shang-Chi will be Marvel's first MCU film featuring an Asian lead actor, as well as a primarily Asian-American and Asian cast. He has since taken a back seat, but with news of a new movie it's likely that Marvel will push the character to the forefront of their publishing initiative.
