Mohammed Shami charged with sexual harrassment; faces 5 years in prison

Cricketer Mohammed Shami's World Cup participation chance suffered a huge blow after a chargesheet was filed against him and his brother for dowry and sexual harassment at Alipore court on Thursday.

However, Shami's lawyer said the police had dropped three prime charges levelled by Jahan including of rape, attempt to murder and physical assault, from the chargesheet.

The chargesheet was filed against the fast bowler almost a year after his wife Hasin Jahan lodged a police complaint, levelling multiple charges against Shami and four of his family members.

A model by profession, Jahan had made headlines earlier in March past year when she alleged that her husband, Shami, had abused her physically and mentally and was involved in several extra-marital affairs.

Shami and his wife Hasin Jahan have had a long-standing case on after the latter came out with screenshots of his alleged affair on social media. The court has directed Kolkata Police to issue notices to the two accused to be present in court. The couple's bitter spat came into limelight on 7 March past year; however, Shami had said that all this was a conspiracy to ruin his career. The BCCI later reinstated his central contract. An internal investigation was conducted by BCCI on match-fixing accusations but Shami was given a clean chit.

Shami was part of the Indian team that lost the five-match ODI series 3-2 against Australia on Wednesday.
