Rockets Fired From Gaza At Tel Aviv, Explosions Heard: Israeli Military

Air raid sirens wailed late Thursday throughout Tel Aviv, Israel's densely populated commercial capital, after an apparent rocket attack from the Gaza Strip.

Reuters journalists heard explosions, but it was unclear whether they were caused by the rockets or the interceptor missiles fired by Israel's Iron Dome system.

Israel's Channel 10 news said Thursday, citing anonymous military officials, that one of the rockets landed in an uninhabited area, and that there were no reports of injuries.

As tensions have risen in Gaza over Israel's lethal response to weekly protests at the frontier during the past year, militants in the enclave have fired hundreds of projectiles into surrounding areas, although not as far north as Tel Aviv.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an emergency security meeting in the Kirya military headquarters following the event.

Hamas denied involvement for the rocket salvo, which it said took place as its leaders met Egyptian delegates about efforts to secure a long-term ceasefire with Israel.

In addition to Hamas, Gaza is home to other militant groups.

About 40 minutes after the alarm went up, traffic was flowing normally on Tel Aviv's main Ayalon highway. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group is thought to be behind the attack, said sources in the Gaza Strip.

"I suggest to Hamas, don't count on it", he told his Cabinet. "It's time to defeat Hamas, it's time to demilitarize the Gaza Strip", he said. Two Israeli soldiers have been killed by Palestinian fire.
