Saudi Arabia claims Khashoggi murder suspects brought to justice

A large number of human rights concerns were raised during the UPR of Saudi Arabia, such as the detention of Saudi human rights activists - including women driving activists - jailed exclusively for peacefully advocating reform, as well as systemic discrimination against women, justice for the slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and violations of worldwide humanitarian law in Yemen.

The groups commended the committee's chairman Eliot Engel and ranking member Michael McCaul for their statements that were critical of President Donald's Trump administration for ignoring a requirement under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act to provide Congress a report by February 8, determining responsibility for Khashoggi's murder-specifically addressing the role of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman-and whether the administration would impose sanctions.

" While not naming any names, he said that 11 Saudi citizens had been indicted for the "heinous crime" past year". Turkish authorities accuse the suspects of arriving in Turkey for Khashoggi's murder, including a cover-up team also in charge of dismembering his body. "We find it hard to understand why an official working in the area of human rights would possibly be unsettled by efforts to shed light on all aspects of the Khashoggi murder", the Turkish presidency said.

Bandar Al-Aiban, who heads Saudi Arabia's human rights commission, stressed though that any calls to "internationalise" the investigation "amount to an interference in our domestic affairs".

As Saudi officials continue to reject calls for an independent investigation, they have also continued to dispute accusations that the country's crown prince was involved in Khashoggi's killing.

Agnes Callamard, UN investigator on extrajudicial executions, said that Saudi officials have not responded to requests to cooperate with her investigation into the murder.
