Steam Now Lets You Stream Games From Anywhere

Valve has announced a new feature for its Steam Link service that will allow you to stream games outside of your home.

What Valve is doing with Steam Link Anywhere mirrors a lot of what's happening elsewhere in the industry.

The feature is now available in early beta and is free of charge to all Steam users through the Steam Link device or app.

Valve did not state the exact specifications required to stream at various resolutions, but added that it would continue to improve the Steam Link Anywhere experience. You could only stream games on your local network at home.

Valve extend Steam Link out of the home and networking API to all developers

The Steam Link app launched on Android almost a year ago, but there were some restrictions with it. They might be throttling production of the handy Steam Link device, but the software lives on - and you can use that to stream games "from any computer running Steam". The new Steam Link Anywhere extends the Steam Link functionality, while a sockets API makes it easier for developers to offer secure connections.

Game streaming is becoming more and more popular as time goes on.

Now, you should be able to connect to your PC that hosts your Steam library through your Android app. For Android users you need to be on the beta version that is from March of this year. At this stage it only works on Android and Raspberry Pi (and the Steam Link box of course) and if you were wanting to try it head on over to the Play Store and grab it now. Valve explain the system here, and among the perks for developers are anonymized network traffic (protecting servers and clients from DDOS attacks) and potentially lower pings through Valve's networks.
