Alleged Gambino crime boss shot, killed outside Staten Island home

The head of the Gambino crime family was shot and killed outside his home in Staten Island on Wednesday night, according to NY media reports.

Legendary New York Post and Daily News crime beat writer Murray Weiss, now a producer for CBS News' "48 Hours", extensively covered the Gambino crime family and told WCBS 880's Steve Scott he has a theory that Cali's murder may also have a connection to the Gotti family.

Cali, 53, was shot outside his large, detached house in Staten Island at about 9.20pm on Wednesday, then run over with a pick-up truck.

"There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing", a statement said.

Authorities are looking at several theories including whether Gotti, the younger brother of late Gambino godfather John Gotti and a capo before going to prison, is now looking to claw back his stake in the family business, the Daily News writes. He died in prison in 2002.

The murder of reputed Gambino crime family boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali Wednesday night was the first big mob hit in New York City since Paul Castellano was killed outside a steakhouse in 1985.

Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali is said to have taken over the running of the organisation from Domenico Cefalu in 2015.

New York's major crime families, the Gambinos, the Luccheses, the Genoveses, the Bonannos and the Colombos, have seen some decline over the past few decades, as federal law enforcement agencies have tried to extricate their influence from construction and other major industries.

Cali shunned the limelight even after becoming don, ruling from the top while lying low in his affluent Todt Hill neighborhood in Staten Island, where Castellano also held court.

Shea said there has been a slight uptick in alleged mob-related violence in NY within the previous year.

After all, it had been 34 years since a Mafia don like him had been "whacked" on the streets of NY.

"We thought those days were over", the city's mayor Bill de Blasio told journalists. His son Salvatore had been shot three months earlier outside the family home, but survived.
