Google Foldable Phone Patent Surfaces Online; See Details

Apart from an overview, the leaked patent images don't reveal much about Google's first foldable smartphone. We've already seen devices from companies like Samsung and Huawei, and teasers from Xiaomi and Oppo. Samsung was the first to launch a foldable smartphone when they unveiled the Galaxy Fold earlier this year. Another sketch shows the device folded in a "Z" shape.

A patent application, noticed by Patently Mobile, seems to suggest that Google is working on or at least dreamed up a foldable display.

Google may be looking to toss its hat in the foldable ring, according to a patent application discovered by Patently Mobile on Tuesday.

These types of patents frequently appear but only rarely do we get to see a finished product based on them. It is worth noting that Google has neither confirmed nor denied that it is now hard at works on a phone that folds in half.

In particular, creating sturdy, durable Z-fold displays (i.e., displays with both inward and outward folds) is greatly complicated by the fragility of the thin-film layers in the display stack.
While we've seen this design in a few other patents it's something fewer manufacturers seem to be considering, as most patents we've seen show phones folding in two. It only mentions it's to be used in a "modern computing device".

Foldable smartphones are the big trend for 2019.

In other words, if a Google folding phone is in the works, Google probably won't be in a hurry to reach the market with it, or use it to pioneer a unique Z-folding design.
