Last remaining United States diplomats leave Venezuela amid worsening tensions

The U.S. flag outside the embassy had been taken down.

Maduro's government in January cut ties with the US over its recognition of Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader, a stand taken by about 50 other countries that contend Maduro's re-election previous year was rigged and that he has no legitimacy.

According to Reuters US official said the diplomats were flown out in a civilian charter aircraft. The United States has imposed sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry as well as individuals linked to Maduro's government, and U.S. President Donald Trump has said "all options are on the table" in his administration's support for Guaido.

The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced on Monday, March 11, 2019, that it will withdraw all remaining U.S. personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela this week. "They are fully dedicated to our mission of supporting the Venezuelan people's aspirations to live in a democracy and build a better future for their families". "We look forward to resuming our presence once the transition to democracy begins", Pompeo said in a statement. "It's the Maduro regime which has prevented that", he said.

That could explain why, instead of dispatching crews to fix the problem, France24 reports that Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro is dispatching prosecutors to find and charge opposition leader Juan Guaido with sabotaging the country's grid system by causing a major explosion at the Guiado dam.

Morales, who is on a visit to Greece, said meddling in the domestic affairs of another country never bodes well.
