Trump on Brexit: I'm Surprised at How Badly it Has All Gone

In a somewhat chaotic Oval Office press conference with the Taoiseach, Mr Trump said he intends to visit Ireland this year, renewed his pledge to build a border wall with Mexico and mocked his potential 2020 presidential rival, Irish-American politician Beto O'Rourke.

Mr Varadkar also said Ireland wants frictionless trade with Britain and believes in free trade and that, while it may be years before the United Kingdom "sorts itself out", the European Union is "available to talk trade with the US".

When Mr Trump was asked about it by U.S. reporters, he turned to Mr Varadkar and said: "We have a border situation also".

President Trump, perhaps not wanting to spoil the chummy mood of the annual St. Patrick's Day-themed visit, announced at the start of his meetings with the Irish prime minister Thursday that he wasn't going to comment on Brexit, on which he and his guest vigorously disagree.

Mr Trump said he would like to see Brexit "work out", adding, "we are talking with them about trade and we can do a very big trade deal with the UK".

"It is really great to have the prime minister of Ireland with us", Trump said, before stating that he's becoming "fast friends" with the Taoiseach.

Mr Murphy and law society president Patrick Dorgan travelled to Washington DC where the Government's "Ireland: An worldwide legal centre" initiative was launched at the Irish Embassy as part of the St Patrick's Day celebrations. "I regret that Brexit's happening".

At least 49 people were killed and dozens injured in the unprecedented attack that stunned the nation and the world. Some offered rides to the grocery store or volunteered to walk with their Muslim neighbours if they felt unsafe.

Later Mr Trump said the United States and Ireland were bound together with ties of kinship and friendship.

"They were very well briefed", Varadkar said of his meeting with Pence and his wife. I missed it last time but I would have loved to have been there. I mean. she's got to do what she's got to do.

"It's just a great place", he added.

Mrs Foster, who is in Washington for St Patrick's Day, invited Mr Trump to The Open at Royal Portrush in July as she attended a lunch on Capitol Hill addressed by the President.

Prior to the breakfast, Varadkar said differences between their administrations' views on gay rights are clear, but that the two countries have a good working relationship, according to the Independent.

Of his Irish grandfather, VP Pence said: "He was proud of being American but I can still hear that Irish brogue". "One way or the other it's going to work out".
