10.5-inch iPad Pro killed off by new iPad Air

10.5-inch iPad Pro killed off by new iPad Air

The Apple-designed Neural Engine of the A12 Bionic chip powers the next generation of apps and iPad workflows using advanced machine learning and Core ML for engaging AR experiences, photo-realistic effects in 3D games and stunning graphics performance within apps. The iPad range may be looking straightforward now, with a clean arc from affordable models at one end and the all-singing, all-dancing iPad Pro at the other, but that doesn't mean there's no room for confusion left.

"Like the 10.5" iPad Pro, the iPad Air is equipped with Apple's original Smart Connector, so it can be used with the Smart Keyboard, but not the more modern Smart Keyboard Folio of the 2018 iPad Pros. The iPad Mini starts at £399, making it more expensive than the standard iPad costing £319; the iPad Air starts at £479. Apple officially discontinued the model in 2017, in favor of the 2017 iPad. The first-generation Apple Pencil costs $99, while the keyboard for the iPad Air costs $159.

Apple today refreshed the iPad Mini and reintroduced the iPad Air, giving both a much more powerful A12 Bionic processor. The iPad Air comes with a 30.2 wHr lithium-polymer battery, while the Mini has a 19.1 wHr rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. Apple's most compact iPad is now available for pre-order, and already selling like hotcakes before its release in stores next week.

Thanks to the improved screen, Apple says the mini actually now has the highest pixel density of any iPad. Both have a lot of common features including the 8-megapixel f/2.4 primary camera, and a 7MP f/2.2 front camera for FaceTime calls.

Apple quietly announces 10.5-inch iPad Air and refreshed iPad mini
iPad Air 2019 replaces 2017 iPad Pro 10.5, not $329 iPad

The company has claimed that the iPad Mini now delivers "three times the performance and nine times faster graphics". The new iPads are available to order starting today and in stores next week. Both iPads come in 64GB and 256GB storage capacity options. Prices for iPad mini start at $399/£399 for the Wi-Fi model and $529/£519 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version.

No luck on a USB-C port, however, as the Mini and Air are still using Apple's proprietary Lightning port. This time, the Mini will have the same chip as the Air, along with support for the Apple Pencil stylus.

So, yeah, there's a pretty good chance you'll soon be able to get a 10.5-inch iPad Pro for as little as $400 brand-new, unused, and untouched.
