Thiem beats Federer to win Indian Wells

Dominic Thiem climbed to a career-best ranking of fourth on Monday after clinching his maiden ATP Masters title with his defeat of Roger Federer at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

"I am not too disappointed".

Canadian sensation Bianca Andreescu became the first wild card to win the WTA title at Indian Wells on Sunday with a gritty 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber. That's how it goes. I had to get used to Roger's game.

Tennis legend Roger Federer is of the belief the future of the sport is in good hands once he and Rafael Nadal retires. That keeps me upbeat, and I feel it's a privilege when I feel this way leaving a tournament. 'It feels just unreal what happened in this 10 days, Thiem said. "But it would be nice if I could hold this shape and all of these positive emotions in the next tournament and every tournament I play.".

Dominic Thiem mastered an act familiar to so many first-time champions, sinking to the floor in disbelief, arms outstretched, and he had good reason. Rafa has won an unprecedented 11 titles in men's singles at the major tournament.

Thiem won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 against the heavily-favored Federer to secure his first ATP Masters 1000 event and a first title since the St. Petersburg Open in Russian Federation in September 2018. It's a massive event to win.

Federer is looking forward to the Miami Open where he headlines the bottom half of the draw. Wawrinka beat Federer three times in clay court matches in Monte-Carlo in 2009 and in the 2014 final and Roland Garros in 2015 and is chasing his first win on hard court against his compatriot. Blake had nothing more left in the tank and Roger claimed the third set 6-0, finishing the encounter with a service victor to celebrate his third consecutive title at Indian Wells, winning 14 of the last 17 games to race towards the finish line and complete Indian Wells hat-trick. "Tennis is very healthy, so it's not really hard to be Roger Federer", he said.

Federer could face Danil Medvedev in the Round of 16, Kevin Anderson or Karen Khachanov in the quarter final and a semifinal against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or last year's Miami finalist Alexander Zverev.
