Iraqi Parliament sacks Nineveh governor, orders compensation for Mosul ferry victims

At least 90 people, including men, women, and children, were killed on March 21 when an overloaded ferry sank in the Tigris River near the northern city of Mosul, killing more than 100 people.

The Iraq parliament has voted on Sunday, March 24, 2019, to sack Nineveh provincial governor Nawfel Akoub and his two deputies, following the tragic sinking of a ferry in the Tigris River that killed almost 100 people on Thursday, March 21, 2019. She survived ISIS only to die in the ferry that sailed only a hundred meters from the shore to Umm al-Rabeein Island.

Another accused the owners of a picnic site the families were heading to of being "criminals".

Iraq's parliament deputy speaker says the house's majority has voted to sack a provincial official following the tragic sinking of a ferry in the Tigris River that killed almost 100 people.

The parliament urged the government to launch an urgent campaign to rebuild Nineveh and allocate a budget for the province that had been considerably damaged during the war against the Islamic State.
