Doctor ‘fathered 49 children’ in IVF scandal

DNA tests were conducted yesterday and they confirmed that 49 children in the case are direct descendants of Karbaat.

A Dutch fertility doctor accused of illegally using his own sperm to inseminate his patients has been found to be the father of at least 49 children.

Jan Karbaat died in 2017, and after his death dozens of people came forward to say that they suspected that he had used his own sperm to impregnate their mothers, without their knowledge.

"The results confirm serious suspicions that Karbaat used his own sperm at his clinic", Defence for Children said.

The clinic where the doctor worked closed down in 2009, but groups representing the so-called "Karbaatkinderen" believe Mr Karbaat may have fathered many more children than the 49 identified.

At the time, judges ruled that DNA tests could be carried out, but said the results had to be sealed pending the outcome of further court cases, Dutch media reported.

Martijn van Halen, one of the doctor's children, told Dutch news website nrc.nl: "It's nice to know for sure".

But legal representatives for the Karbaat's family argued that judges must respect their clients' right to having a private life.

"Now, after years of uncertainty the plaintiffs can finally close a chapter and start processing the fact that they are one of Karbaat's many descendants", De Witte said. "She really wanted a child and could not have one with my parental father".

Almost 50 children have received closure following years of anguish after they were told their biological father was a doctor who impregnated their mother at his fertility clinic.

Applicants can apply in writing to an official body called the FIOM, which maintains a DNA database to match children conceived via anonymous donors.
