Spring Storm Closes Schools And Roads Throughout Central US

Numerous schools around the state have closed. Sergeant Jesse Grabow tweeted that he couldn't remember a day with as many tractor trailer incidents.

The Twin Cities area also is in a winter storm watch and a blizzard warning was issued on a line from Redwood Falls to the St. Cloud area.

From the Rockies to the central plains and Great Lakes, millions of Americans are in the storm's path.

No deaths were reported from the storm, but thousands of airline flights were canceled from Denver to Chicago, and thousands of stranded motorists and vehicle crashes were reported throughout the area.

Snow began in the Plains and Upper Midwest Wednesday, and continues on Thursday from eastern Colorado and northwestern Kansas into parts of western and central Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, northern and central Wisconsin and northern MI.

Snow alerts are still in effect Friday for Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and MI. The Minnesota State Patrol responded to 213 crashes by Wednesday evening.

Blizzard warnings have been posted from Colorado to Minnesota as a storm develops that could rival last month's bomb cyclone.

"We are waiting to see what happens when the snow melts", she said, noting that warm temperatures since then have thawed the ground and could result in less flooding.

More than 10,000 homes and businesses were without power in South Dakota and about another 10,000 in Minnesota early Thursday, according to the tracking site PowerOutage.Us.

Early on Wednesday morning, thundersnow was reported in Pierre and surrounding parts of South Dakota, as well as southern Minnesota. "The color is likely due to dust that was blown by high winds all the way from west Texas". Forecasters in New Mexico said the winds also would make travel hard on north-south oriented roads such as Interstate 25.

Forecasters said that the storm will spread snow over the Central and Northern Plains on Wednesday.

Even moderate rises in the Missouri River will push more water into drenched Fremont County in southwestern Iowa, Emergency Manager Mike Crecelius said.

"The problem is that we're not getting any time for the water to recede and things to dry out, so the levees can't be fixed; houses can't be fixed; crops can't be planted", he said.
