Assange used Ecuador's embassy for 'spying'- Ecuador

Moreno also reiterated the claim made by the Ecuadorean government that Assange's hygiene and behavior constituted an "aggressive campaign against Ecuador" from inside the embassy.

Apparently more interested in (allegedly) salacious details of Assange's nearly seven-year exile inside the west-London embassy, members of the United Kingdom and USA press have been breathlessly repeating flaky Quito-leaked claims about his living habits and personal hygiene.

Moreno insisted it was Assange's actions against other democratic countries, taken while he lived in Ecuador's embassy for seven years, that had led to the eviction.

German and Spanish lawmakers protested against Julian Assange's detention on Monday, gathering outside a London prison to urge Britain and the European Union to prevent his extradition to the United States.

Julian Assange's lawyers dispute these claims and say Ecuadorian government has been "making outrageous allegations over the last few days to justify what was an unlawful and extraordinary act in allowing British police to come inside an embassy".

He was arrested at the embassy on Thursday after Ecuador revoked his asylum, and is now also fighting a U.S. extradition warrant relating to the release by WikiLeaks of a huge cache of official documents.

Speaking to the Guardian, President Moreno claimed Ecuador's old government provided facilities within the embassy "to interfere" with other states.

"We can not allow our house, the house that opened its doors, to become a center for spying", he added.

The comments in an interview with The Guardian newspaper show the degradation of Assange's relationship with Ecuador, which allowed him to stay in the London embassy for almost seven years.

Supporters of Assange protest outside the British Embassy in Washington, DC.

"The key issue at the moment is USA extradition, which we have warned about for many years".

"This activity violates asylum conditions".

Add John Oliver to the list of people who are backing - albeit reluctantly - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

She also said Assange's fears of a USA extradition threat were proved correct this week after allegations were made that he conspired to hack into a classified Pentagon computer.

The US indictment charges Assange with "conspiracy", alleging that he worked with former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to crack a password stored on Department of Defence computers in March 2010.

He also decried what he said was Assange's behaviour inside the embassy: "He mistreated our officials in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, abused the patience of Ecuadorians".
