A tornado flattened much of the south side of Franklin, Texas, overturning mobile homes and damaging other residences, said Robertson County Sheriff Gerald Yezak.

Authorities say a possible tornado has touched down in western MS, causing damage to several businesses and vehicles.

Hamilton is 225 kilometres southwest of Memphis, Tennessee.

A twister hit Vicksburg, Mississippi early Saturday evening.

Texas is seeing the beginning of the unsafe and severe storms forecast to slam parts of the Southeast and Ohio River Valley this weekend.

The tree "flattened the vehicle like a pancake", said Capt. Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

The Storm Prediction Center said the primary threats in the watch area are for damaging wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour and isolated areas with large hail, up to one inch in diameter.

At least one tornado was reported in southeast Alabama early Sunday, as CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said as many as 90 million people could be threatened by the storms.

The storm system's death toll rose to at least five on Sunday, when authorities reported the death of a Texas woman whose mobile home was destroyed Saturday night. Heavy rain may also lead to localized flash flooding in areas prone to flooding.

Franklin, Texas, roughly 125 miles south of Dallas, was nearly entirely flattened by a tornado, according to the Robertson County Sheriff's Office.

The weather service also says preliminary information showed an EF-3 tornado with winds of 140 mph touched down in Franklin, located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) south of Dallas. Two people were hospitalized for injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene, Yezak said. "We are just a mess", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told the outlet. Some people had to be extricated from their homes.

By late Saturday, the storms were expected to organize into a line as they cross the western border of Mississippi.

Tornado warnings and watches were posted in the state Saturday night as the severe weather exited MS into Alabama.

Meteorologist Monique Sellers said they've received reports of downed trees, as well as damage to buildings and a transmission tower. Alto is situated about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Houston.
