Paris' Notre Dame cathedral on fire

Smoke and flames could be seen from the top of the cathedral.

A blaze is under way at the famed Notre Dame cathedral in the French capital, Paris, according to the city's fire service.

A major operation is now under way as firefighters attempt to tackle the large blaze and an area surrounding the Gothic building has been cleared.

"So terrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris".

First Lady Melania Trump tweeted that her "heart breaks" for locals in Paris after the fire, adding that she's also "praying for everyone's safety".

In 2012, the Archbishop of Paris and the Diocese of Paris founded "The Friends of Notre Dame" to raise funds for the structural deterioration, with renovation and fix efforts ongoing.
