Sunk cost of Sanchez holding Man United back

Alexis Sanchez could be in line for a surprise call-up for Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final second leg with Barcelona after travelling with the club to Spain.

Chelsea are in dire need of strengthening in the summer, given the Blues are aware that we will have to go through a period without signing players.

Solskjaer revealed Alexis Sanchez is back in contention and returns to the squad after six weeks out with a knee injury.

"That's the $100 million question - who can score the goals", the manager, back at the stadium where he scored the 1999 Champions League final victor, said.

"I don't look back on that night too often; I'm just looking forward to seeing if we can play better against Barcelona".

United must improve from the first leg when they did not manage a single shot on target as Luke Show's own goal proved to be the difference maker.

"Let's hope when he's on the pitch he can be happy with his performance".

Falling down the pecking order in a Barca squad laced with star talent and built around arguably the best player ever in Messi is one thing.

United have scored only once at home in five European games, but they have proven to be better away from home.

Ousmane Dembele started, while the likes of Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho were all given breathers with this game in mind.

Two of those games were at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain and the one they lost in Valencia was when they were already through the group stage.

United have sold out their allocation of 4,610 tickets and, with other fans expected to travel in the hope of securing tickets locally, the club have taken various steps to try to maximise their safety and limit the threat of trouble.

Barca have a 1-0 lead from the first leg at Old Trafford, but Valverde stressed that United were far from out of the tie.

Similarly United's chance of winning the Champions League this season has reduced to around 1%.
