More than 200 activists arrested in London climate change protests

Norwich members of environmental group Extinction Rebellion stopped traffic in London today as part of global climate change protests.

Extinction Rebellion said their intention was to conduct non-violent acts of resistance and "peaceful action" but three men have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage near the Shell HQ.

At least, Waterloo Bridge was unwittingly pedestrianised.

Extinction Rebellion said "over 100 courageous rebels" had been arrested in total.

More than 100 Norwich branch members of environmental group Extinction Rebellion's travelled to London today to block five of the cities busiest roads and demand government action on climate change.

Transport for London have said that said that Marble Arch remains blocked. As a large group of officers arrived to remove the campaigners, they were met with chants of "We are peaceful what about you?"

"In London, people are willing to be arrested and to stay".

The protestors say that every second that is wasted by politicians is more blood on the government's hands. The United Kingdom-based group has urged the government to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025, declare a climate and ecological emergency and set up a citizens' assembly on climate and ecological justice.

Financial Times also noted that Extinction Rebellion makes a point of having demonstrators arrested; in the last six months or so, over 200 people affiliated with the movement have been arrested.

Extinction Rebellion said it intentionally caused more than 6,000 pounds ($7,800) of damage to Shell's office by breaking a revolving door, spray-painting "lies" across the building and climbing the scaffolding to put up a banner saying "Shell Knows".

The remaining 117 were on Waterloo Bridge on Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday, with the majority made for Public Order Act offences and obstructing a highway.

"We have no intention of leaving until the government listens to us", he said.

Elsewhere, demonstrators blockaded roads forcing police to redirect traffic around them.
